Course Description:

This year-long seminar is designed for advanced law students who wish to develop and complete a full-length, high-quality legal article (or “comment”) of publishable quality. The seminar will meet 13-14 times during the academic year on Tuesdays.  The fall meetings will be Aug. 27, Sept. 3, Oct 1, Oct 15, Oct 29, Nov. 12, Nov. 26th.  Students are expected to do significant independent work between seminar meetings.  During fall semester, students will work together, with the guidance of the professor, to identify and develop topics. Then, students will do background research, develop a draft thesis, create a comprehensive outline of arguments, and make substantial headway toward a draft by the end of the semester. In the spring semester, students complete multiple drafts, with substantial feedback from each other. Enrollment, by application, is limited to 12 students.The application is due at 12:00 NOON on Friday, July 12, 2019, and it should be submitted (along with any relevant documents) to the Records Office or emailed to

The course may be taken for SAW credit.  All second and third-year students, LLM students, and SJD students may apply to take the course. 

Course Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will have developed and practiced:

-advanced forms of legal researched other relevant forms of academic research

-sophisticated forms of legal analysis appropriate for an academic audience

-drafting and rewriting in response to criticism

-identifying interesting topics and refining them

-presenting and defending original ideas to an audience

-collaborating with others through editing and helping authors improve their ideas by identifying and addressing argumentative strengths and weaknesses
