General Course Description:

This course is an introduction to public health law and policy in the United States. We will discuss ways that law can and should be used to improve health, focusing on the legal basis and limits of public health laws (e.g. freedom of speech, freedom of religion, due process, privacy). We will examine different legal strategies that have been used to address traditional and contemporary public health problems. The course will cover topics including infectious diseases and mandatory vaccinations; obesity and nutritional labeling; health disparities; and water quality and the crisis in Flint, Michigan.
