General Course Description:

Nearly all lawyers, in both litigation and transactional practices, negotiate on a regular basis.  “Negotiation Theory and Practice,” a 3-unit experiential course taught in an intensive workshop format, provides a theoretical and conceptual understanding of how this critical process works and gives students the opportunity to develop their skills through a series of simulation exercises and class discussions.

The course is designed to be equally valuable for students planning to pursue careers in transactional law or in litigation.  For students pursuing the Business Law and Policy Specialization, the course counts as a “transactional course” in the general Business Law Track.

This course will be offered for two weeks in January (the “J-Term”). Course credits earned during the J-Term will count as spring semester units.  The class will meet every weekday from January 3 through January 13, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm AND January 9 and 11 from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm.  Each session will include some lecture, at least one (but usually two) simulation exercises, and class discussions.  “Negotiation Theory & Practice” will not be offered in the spring semester this year – only in the J-Term.

If you wish to enroll in the class, you must be back from winter break in time for the first class meeting on Tuesday, January 3.  You should also recognize that this will be a full time commitment for that two week period of time.  If you enroll in this class, you may not enroll in any other J-Term course.

To enroll, indicate your desire to register for the class by the June deadline to sign up for experiential courses.  Enrollment in this course will not count towards your first pass units.  The course will be limited to 96 students.  Students who made a commitment to the course before the deadline last year and did not get a space will have first priority.

If you register by the June experiential course deadline, you will be notified as to whether you were admitted by early July and will not be permitted to drop the course after August 25, for any reason.  Remember that you then must arrive back on campus for class on Tuesday morning, January 3, 2017.  Please do not register if you are not certain both that you wish to take the class and are willing to return to campus by the morning of January 3.

Students cannot take both Law 972 and Law 709.
