General Course Description:

**Completion of Law 608- Intersection of Law, Health and Public Policy:  Medical-Legal Partnerships, is pre-requisite to enrollment in this course.**

Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLPs) represent a new service delivery model designed to improve patient outcomes by addressing social determinants of health.  Under the MLP model, public interest lawyers provide legal services to low-income patients identified by health care professionals in the clinic or hospital setting where the prescription for better health requires legal assistance.   This clinic provides students the opportunity to apply the theory of MLPs in a real-world setting and learn directly from legal and medical practitioners in the field who see the manifestations of poverty every day.  Students will work directly with the Right to Health Project (RHP), a Medical-Legal Partnership operated by Bet Tzedek Legal Services in partnership with St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood and St. Vincent Medical Center downtown.  Students will receive intensive training and, under the supervision of project attorneys and UCLA faculty, interview community members referred to the RHP and provide appropriate counseling and legal representation.  Students will also train medical center staff and professionals regarding how the RHP can be used to improve community health.  Finally, students will work collectively to identify potential legislative and/or policy responses to issues observed in the clinic.  Students are required to attend a two hour classroom seminar each week, in addition to serving the clinic which will include onsite work at St. Francis Medical Center, St. Vincent Medical Center and Bet Tzedek Legal Services.  Students are required to be available on Fridays to work onsite at Bet Tzedek Legal Services.
