Law 750 - Youth & Justice Clinic
Note: Law 750 is a live client clinical yearlong course. An application is required for admission. There are no prerequisites required for this clinic. Students who have taken Law 532 (in Fall 2013) will be given first priority. Law 750 is a 4 unit course. It will meet one every week in the Fall (for a clinical seminar training component – 2 unit) and meet as needed, including client case work, in the Spring (2 units). Law 750 is restricted to 2L and 3L law students. Law 532 (seminar) will not be taught this year.
This clinical course examines the role of the lawyer in the juvenile justice process. Students will work in teams representing detained youth on non-criminal, civil legal issues in cooperation with attorneys and nonprofit organizations in Los Angeles. In terms of clinical lawyering skills, the class provides opportunities, both through simulation and work on real cases, to develop skills in client interviewing and counseling, case preparation, interviewing experts, motion/brief writing, policy briefing and institutional advocacy. A significant out of class time commitment is required.
This graded, four-unit clinical course is limited to maximum of eight students. The fall clinical training component will provide students a complete understanding of the inner workings of the Juvenile Justice System, both nationally and locally with a focus on issues impacting youth who interact with the criminal justice system. Students will learn now to interview youth/child clients, spot legal issues, advocate within county agencies and how to highlight systematic problems. In the Spring, students will represent clients in partnership with attorneys in Los Angeles one or more of the following areas: special education (IEP hearings), immigration (SIJS cases), expulsion (County administrative hearings), guardianship/adoption (agency filings), expungement (interview and county filings) and statewide youth related legislation (research and bill writing). In addition, students will complete a policy brief on similar tangible work product on a systemic issue and present to an appropriate audience.
