General Course Description:

This seminar gives students the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge scholarship in the areas of entertainment, media, and intellectual property, with a focus on copyright law (and this year delving into trademark tarnishment).  During the first part of the seminar,we will read and discuss works in progress of four leading scholars. We will analyze the works in progress, both regarding the substance of their argument and as models of legal scholarship to assist students in writing their own papers. The scholars will also come to UCLA for a day-long workshop, on Sunday, November 8, 2015, to present their papers. Students will have spring semester to write a first draft and submit their final papers.

In order to take this seminar, you must have already taken or be concurrently taking a course in copyright, media, or telecommunications law. The seminar also requires your attendance at the Sunday, November 8, workshop, as well as our weekly meetings fall semester, and two Friday workshops spring semester. We do not meet after the November 8 workshop in the fall.  We will not meet during spring semester, EXCEPT for two day-long workshops on Fridays, January 15 and 22, 2016, when students will give oral presentations on their works in progress.

This seminar fulfills the SAW requirement. Each student will write and presenta scholarly research paper in some area of copyright media, ortelecommunications law. Students will also write short response papers to the scholars’ works in progress.
